Nepal Earthquake: God-sent or Man-made?

As the earth shook, quaked and trembled in Nepal on April 25, 2015, thousands were killed in a matter of minutes, caught under the rubble of the fallen debris of homes buildings.  Measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale, the earth shivered for around half a minute flattening almost everything in the Kathmandu valley.
This quake was the largest one in the region in the past 8 decades; the last big quake that took place was back in 1934. So far over 3000 people are reported to have died across, Nepal, India, China (Tibet) and Bangladesh and the toll is expected to rise as more bodies are pulled out of the debris, all the people that are presumed to be missing are accounted for.
Earthquakes are major cataclysmic events that occur because of tectonic plates pushing against each other. Across the fault lines, where these plates clash, energy keeps building up overtime and is dissipated in the form of an earthquake at regular intervals of times.
These fault lines lie across the world, and the quake caused in Nepal was along the 1,400-mile Indo-Eurasian fault line, with the India plate is pushing its way up against the Eurasian plate at a rate of about 5 centimetres, or approx 2 inches, a year. This is why the whole Himalayan plateau is prone to earthquake, and this is what caused the latest devastation in Nepal.
Events like earthquake are rarer and unpredictable, and have always confounded the scientific community. While we can’t pinpoint the triggers, we do know the science of what and how it is caused. And one thing we are sure of, the reasons are too big and to multifarious to be pinpointed at one direction.

Even in the ancient times, the unscientific man knew that earthquakes were different from the rest of the events (which could be blamed to certain deity or other), hence even the myths were all so very different from the one about serpents changing loads to giant on whose head the earth rests goes on to turn his head.
Yet, there is one theory or linkage that is much debated, but cannot be truly debunked, namely the connection between earthquakes and climate change. Scientists across the globe are researching to find if there is a direct (or a discrete) connection between the two.
While the connection is tenuous at the moment, the scientific community is now looking at various clues if climate-change related events could be offsetting cataclysms like earthquake or Tsunamis.
Bill McGuire, who is currently Professor of Geophysical and Climate Hazards at UCL, examined the link between climate-change and earthquakes and published a paper (or rather a book on the same).

In “Waking the Giant: How a changing climate triggers earthquakes, tsunamis, and volcanoes“, he pored over the geological history of the planet and reached a conclusion that events like earthquakes and tsunamis are on the rise.
The central idea is that melting ice-caps and rising sea-levels redistribute weight over continental fault-lines (like the one in Nepal) and thereby influence disasters like earthquakes or volcanoes.
Glacier_Mass_Balance_MapBut as for climate change affecting earthquakes, there are tentative hints of links. Changing ice caps and sea-level redistribute weight over fault lines, which could potentially have an influence on earthquake occurrences.
No studies quantify the relationship to a high level of detail, so recent earthquakes should not be linked with climate change. 20,000 years ago, with global temperatures some 6 degrees milder and ice blankets all across Europe and North America, the earth presented a very different picture.
The sea-level since that time has risen by some 130 metres and growing rapidly. Could this be one of the factors (mind you, not the only one) that influences such events?
While, there will be many who would readily debunk the very discussion as hearsay or bunkum, the fact remains that catastrophic events like earthquakes and tsunamis are indeed influenced by the man’s hand. Take the case of the 1967 earthquake in Koynanagar (Maharashtra) which was induced by the construction of the Koyna dam.

Earthquakes and tremors caused by human activity that alters the stresses and strains on the Earth’s crust are termed as induced seismicity. According to researchers, the 2008 Sichuan earthquake, which caused approximately 68,000 deaths, was caused by the construction and filling of the Zipingpu Dam that could have triggered the earthquake.
Many scientists have warned that construction of dams in such seismic zones like the Tehri Dam or even the Three Gorges Dam will result in huge earthquakes in the days to come.
While the jury is still not out on the fact that anthropogenic climate-change has influence on natural disasters, the fact remains that the damages caused by such events are exacerbated by the work of man. For instance, the floods of Uttarakhand in 2013 caused much havoc largely due to manner in which settlements were made across the length of the rivers flowing through the state.

Similarly, the floods in Kashmir are much severe since the natural flow of water has been constricted by unplanned and often illegal construction.
And while the link of man to causation is disputed, there is no dispute on the link to destruction caused in the wake. It is pretty obvious that the destruction caused by such events is often directly related to mankind’s increasing footprint. The last nepal earthquakemajor earthquake to strike Nepal in 1934 (8.2 magnitude) was some 3.5 times more devastating than the current one (7.8).
Yet, the current has caused more damage (relatively) simply because of the hap-hazard urbanisation that has happened over the ages .

Kashmiri Hindu Heritage Day celebrates Kashmir

News and Events
Kashmiri Hindu Heritage Day celebrates Kashmir
Miami Shores, USA March 28, 2015
The Kashmiri Community of South Florida, jointly with "Preserve Our Heritage" and Kashmir Hindu Foundation, recently celebrated the third anniversary of their annual event,"Kashmiri Hindu Heritage Day". The event, to honor the rich Kashmiri Hindu Culture, was held on March 28th, 2015, at the Miami Shores Recreational Center, with the support of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, the Cultural Affairs Council, the Mayor, and the Miami-Dade County Board of County Commissioners.

The event began with a meet-and-greet and a food tasting session where the guests were welcomed to sample the mouthwatering authentic Kashmiri cuisine, such as Dumaloo, Pulao, Palak-Nadur along with the ever popular Roth and Kehwa. After the meet-and-greet, everyone visited the exhibits, showcasing the various aspects of Kashmiri Hindu culture, such as art, architecture, textiles, handicrafts, saints, and philosophers. Soon, the program moved on to the musical and cultural aspect of the rich Kashmiri heritage. And, the children from South Florida community were ready with a cultural bonanza for the guests present. But we could not go on without mentioning a very dear and prominent member of our Kashmiri community whom we lost recently. Mr. Shashi Shakher was a very loving and caring person who was very passionate about Kashmiri culture and cuisine. It was a very emotional moment for everyone as Dr. Shashi Razdan remembered and honored him for his contributions in the Kashmiri community by presenting a plaque to his two daughters, Priyanka and Nina Shakher.

Soon, the children from the community began the program by offering the universal prayers and invoking the blessings from the Lord to guide everyone to be able to create a world where all the cultures coexist peacefully. At this time, the Mayor of Miami Shores Council, Ms. Herta Holly, was welcomed by Shri G.N. Raina, the senior editor of Kashmiri online magazine Shehjar, and Shri Vijay Kaul, a respected senior member of the community. Ms. Holly then presented the certificate of recognition to Raina Sahib and congratulated the Kashmiri community for their efforts in bringing cultural awareness to South Florida by showcasing rich Kashmiri culture and heritage. In her speech, she also mentioned that it was this blend of most diverse communities that contributed to South Florida's unique cultural reputation. This was followed by a speech by Dr. Shaykher, another prominent member of the community, who spoke about the importance of preserving one's culture and heritage in today's times and learn from each other's unique traditions.

This was followed by an interesting lineup of performances by the kids, including an Indian classical dance called Bharatnatyam, a flute recital, Kashmiri folk dance Rouff, and a modern take on the traditional dance on a melodious Kashmiri folk song. Besides these wonderful performances, the older kids shared their experiences about growing up in America and learning the best of both cultures.

Moving on, there was a beautiful video presentation by Deepak Ganju that gave a visual voyage to the Valley of Kashmir, taking everyone on a journey through memory lane, as the teary-eyed audience reminisced about their homes they had left behind years ago. That brought us to the end of the day's celebration, indeed another milestone in our journey to promote and preserve our culture and heritage in today's challenging times. As a closing note, a vote of thanks was given by Dr. Shaykher to everyone who had worked hard to make this event a success. Please see photo Feature at:

J&K BJP to ensure rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits, skirts controversial issues

By: Press Trust of India | Jammu | Updated: April 19, 2015 6:53 pm
The ruling BJP in Jammu and Kashmir on Sunday passed a resolution pledging to ensure rehabilitation of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley but avoided any reference to recent controversies like on separate settlements for those displaced by militancy.
In the first meeting of the BJP’s state working committee after it came to power for the first time in the state, the party appeared keen not to rock the boat by raking up any controversial issue, including on separatists, and said it would not allow any activity in the state which will be “detrimental to the national interest”.
The party also committed to rehabilitation of refugees from West Pakistan and PoK while skirting the issue of their citizenship.

While releasing the resolution adopted by the party during the two-day meeting of the state working committee held in Katra, BJP state chief spokesman Sunil Sethi said Kashmiri Pandits make the “identity of Kashmir complete” and the party would ensure their rehabilitation in the Valley as per their aspirations.
“It is resolved that the identity of Kashmir is incomplete without Kashmiri Pandits and it will be ensured that they return to the Valley as per the security and safety requirements and that their settlement in Kashmir will be as per their desires, aspirations and practicability,” he said.
On the issue of West Pakistan refugees, the party said it would ensure that the refugees are given their rights to livelihood and meaningful living.
Sethi said the party would also resolve to work for the one time settlement of the refugees from the Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).
The party resolved to show gratitude to the voters of Jammu and Kashmir, who have overwhelmingly voted in “favour of democracy by rejecting all threats and intimidations from organisation and separatism”.
“It is resolved that the coalition of PDP and BJP will work for betterment of the people of Jammu and Kashmir by addressing the issue of unemployment, ensuring corruption-free and responsive government,” Sethi said.
He said the nationalism in Jammu and Kashmir will be encouraged and no activity will be allowed in the state which will be “detrimental to the national interest”.
As per the party sources, the resolution comes days after when the senior party leaders asked the local unit of BJP to keep itself away from controversies and focus on the issues of governance and showcase its achievements to the people of the state.
There has been unease in BJP’s ties with the PDP, especially over the release of separatist leader Masarat Alam and on the issue of return of Kashmiri Pandits in the Valley.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose wanted ruthless dictatorship in India for 20 years

Recent allegations about a newly independent India under Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru snooping on the kin of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is what conspiracy theorists and spin doctors needed to push their agenda — that Netaji was a greater patriot than Pandit Nehru. The "see-I-told-you" band of people, some of them public intellectuals, have kept the media and political circles abuzz with all sorts of activity ever since.

Every day, someone or the other claims to know what really happened to Bose and blames Pandit Nehru and the Congress for it. Any narrative or opinion that runs contrary to this new perception is immediately denounced as a work of traitors. However, Bose's admirers conveniently ignore his Faustian treaty with Nazi Germany and the Empire of Japan.

Netaji Bose, by his own admission in his book, "Indian Struggle" (published in 1935 in London), believed India needed a political system that was a mix of fascism and communism — something that he called samyavad. Netaji made a special trip to Rome in 1935 to present a copy of his book to Italian dictator Benito Mussolini, whom he greatly admired and whose ideals he would follow for the rest of his life. Bose's reactionary views naturally brought him into conflict with the pacifist leaders of Congress, most notably Mahatma Gandhi and Pandit Nehru. But the friction didn't happen in 1935, it happened much earlier.

Bose had organized the annual session of the Indian National Congress in 1928 in Calcutta. There, he organized a guard of honour in full military style—over 2,000 volunteers were drilled in military fashion and organized into battalions; half of them wore military uniforms with "officers" wearing metal epaulettes. For himself, Bose got a senior British military officer's dress tailored by Calcutta-based British firm, Harman's, complemented by an aiguillette and a field marshal's baton; he also assumed the title of general officer commanding, much to the chagrin of Gandhi, who described the whole thing as 'Bertram Mills circus'. But Bose's love for militarism continued just like his love for a good show.

In 1938, at the 51st session of the Congress at Haripura, Bose was the president. He organized for himself a grand ceremony that was no less than a victory march of a triumphant ancient Indian king returning from digvijaya. He supposedly entered the venue in a chariot drawn by 51 bullocks, accompanied by 51 girls in saffron saris, after a two-hour procession through 51 gates that also had 51 brass bands playing. He would do similar shows in Southeast Asia when he came to the helm of Indian National Army and Indian Independence League.

In October 1943, Bose announced the formation of the Provisional Government of Free India (Arzi Hukumat-i-Azad Hind). He arbitrarily assumed the titles of head of state, prime minister, and minister for war and foreign affairs — the first he intended to keep when India was liberated. He demanded total submission and fealty from Indians everywhere; anybody who opposed him, his army or government could be executed (some accounts suggest many were indeed tortured or executed on orders of Bose or with his knowledge).

The INA's proclamation put this into writing: "If any person fails to understand the intentions of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind and the Indian National Army, or of our Ally, the Nippon Army, and dares to commit such acts as are itemized hereunder which would hamper the sacred task of emancipating India, he shall be executed or severely punished in accordance with the Criminal Law of the Provisional Government of Azad Hind and the Indian National Army or with the Martial Law of the Nippon Army."

In a speech the same year in Singapore, Bose spoke about India needing a ruthless dictator for 20 years after liberation. Then Singapore daily, Sunday Express (now defunct), printed his speech where he said, "So long as there is a third party, ie the British, these dissensions will not end. These will go on growing. They will disappear only when an iron dictator rules over India for 20 years. For a few years at least, after the end of British rule in India, there must be a dictatorship...No other constitution can flourish in this country and it is so to India's good that she shall be ruled by a dictator, to begin with ..."

By this time, Netaji seems to have liked Nazism more than fascism. In a speech to students of Tokyo University in 1944, Netaji said India needs to have a philosophy that "should be a synthesis between national socialism (Nazism) and communism". Around this time, of course, any form of cordiality that existed between Bose and Pandit Nehru had evaporated.

While Bose fancied himself as a world leader like Hitler and Mussolini, Pandit Nehru despised both individuals and their ideologies. He expressed his "intense dislike" for fascism and said there can be no middle path between fascism and communism, the former being a "crude and brutal effort of the capitalist order".

Nevertheless, after Bose "died" in that mysterious air crash in August 1945, Pandit Nehru paid a tribute to his former colleague, "In the struggle for the cause of India's independence he has given his life and has escaped all those troubles which brave soldiers like him have to face in the end. He was not only brave but had deep love for freedom. He believed, rightly or wrongly, that whatever he did was for the independence of India ... Although I personally did not agree with him in many respects, and he left us and formed the Forward Bloc, nobody can doubt his sincerity. He struggled throughout his life for the independence of India, in his own way."

The World's Hiighest Battlefield

SURA SOI Siachen....
The World's Hiighest Battlefield. !!

The Siachen glacier is usually regarded as the world's highest battlefield.
With both India and Pakistan claiming the glacier, thousands of soldiers from both countries are stationed in the area.
It borders the Pakistani- and Indian-administered portions of disputed Kashmir. (All photos by Prashant Panjiar)

The glacier has been in the news recently with the deaths in April of about 140 people, most of them soldiers,
on the Pakistani side in an avalanche. Soon after, Pakistan's army chief said Pakistan favoured talks with
India to demilitarise Siachen. The two countries have already held 12 rounds of talks over the disputed glacier

India and Pakistan agreed to a ceasefire over the Siachen glacier in 2003 but thousands of troops are still deployed
in the region. Supplies must be flown in to the Forward Logistics Base by helicopter. India believes that
the glacier is of great strategic and diplomatic value.

More soldiers have died from the harsh conditions in Siachen than in combat. A war memorial on the bank

Dear Everyone,

I SALUTE, each and every Indian Soldier,

Alive, or who Died, Fighting and WINNING

against Pakistan, for...'Siachen'....

The World's Highest Battlefield.!!!!!!

The recent proposal by Pakistan, to make 'Siachen',

a 'NO MAN ZONE' should NEVER be considered.!!

It would be an Insult, and a Mockery to the Indian

Men In Arms, (Dead And Living !) who fought...

'SO HARD, FOR INDIA'... to even consider

this proposal. !!!!!

'JAI HIND'
