Haar Satam

Haar Satam is the day devoted to Sun God.
In Kashmir also, Sun God has been offered prayers since the pre-vedic era. Martand Surya Temple was created to please Sun God.
Kashmiri Pandits offer prayers to Sun God on Haar Satam (Haar Zoon Pachh Satam). As per the Vishnu Puran, a mystic circle or a ritual circle is drawn on the ground (earth) to pray to Sun God. This circle is called "Mandal" (in Sanskrit) and hence "Man'dul" in Kashmiri. This Ritual-Circle is drawn in a specific way (like a Rangoli using colors) and image or symbol of 'Isht Devta' is kept in the middle of it.
As per the tradition the lady of the house, used to wake up early in the morning, take bath, wear fresh washed clothes and make Haar Mandul either outside the door (called Brandh) or inside (called Vuz) or inside kitchen or inside the puja room (Thokur Kuth). It is said the specific shape of Haar Mandul actually represents Surya-Mantra (Om Sam Seem Sadd Suryay Namah).
Kheer and Tehar is cooked on this day and kept as Bhog for Surya Devta. After offering prayers in Thokur Kuth, Tehar and Kheer is kept on this Haar Mandul with a glass of water.
This is how we thank Sun God for giving us "Life". Our ancestors had a unique way of staying in touch with Nature and thank Nature for its grants. Celebration of Haar Satam marks as one of those ways. On this day in Kashmiri Pandit Homes Haar Mandul was a must; however because of exodus, this ritual is getting depleted. Let us all on this Haar Satam make an effort to revive the lost KP heritage and create Haar Mandul to thank Sun God for this life.
