An Open Letter to Pakistan by a Goan Pakistani ? - One of the saddest indictments of Pakistan.

An Open Letter to Pakistan by a Goan Pakistani ?
- One of the saddest indictments of Pakistan.

Dear Pakistan,
Late last year when I was told that I would have to leave you, I was heartbroken. I had tried hard and wished with all my heart that I could have a few more years with you....despite your troubled state. I felt then that I wanted to be by your side, to see you through it, to offer some kind of help or just to not abandon you in your most difficult time. But it seems, destiny had paved a different path for me, a road that would lead me to watch and observe you from a very different perspective.
As I packed up the pieces of our time together Pakistan, I smiled at our many memories but cried at the possibilities that never saw the light of day. You had so much potential to become a strong independent nation, so many talented and highly intelligent people to support you but, somehow you seem to have drifted from the dream your fore fathers had for you, fallen into bad company and collected a group of rather nasty and selfish friends.
You trusted the wrong people who promised to take you and your people to great heights, only to push you down every time your step was bigger than they wanted it. Like many others, I too am guilty of watching you fall, silently, frustrated, with the anger only burning me inside but making no difference to what was going on.
I remember when I was a young girl, my father told me how he had left his home and family in the coconut covered hills to come and be with you, as you were a fledgling young country learning to walk, needing all the help you could get. My father told me how thousands of other young lads like him, got on a ship and headed to Karachi all looking forward to a bright future with you.
My father told me how your father Jinnah had dreams and visions for you, and had invited minorities from across India to share his dream. But dear dear Pakistan, I'm deeply sorry that you lost your father when you had barely even learnt to crawl, followed by a tormented adolescence and then an intensely aggressive puberty with greedy feudal and military foster parents.
Looking back, we thought then that this was the darkest period of your life where you were brainwashed into believing that the sole purpose of your existence was to defend and protect your faith.... and faith became your identity.
You turned away from all the people who supported you as a toddler, you spat hatred towards anyone who disagreed with you. You became violent, cruel and egotistical with the illusion of power you were shown, and instead of becoming a beacon of light and prosperity for the region, you became a source of darkness. No one could get through to you anymore.
And those who could, thought it might be better to observe silently from the comfort of their living rooms. While your good side kept silent, your bad dared to come up to the surface and be heard, not just within your boundaries, but across the globe. Suddenly your bad side brought you into the limelight, the negative publicity matched the large ego you had by now developed, nurtured carefully by your evil step-father Zia.
Many of the young minorities who had left India to be by your side when you most needed them, realized they were not needed anymore. They uprooted themselves and their families and quietly made their way to whichever country would accept them with tolerant arms as India had closed its doors on them and they could never return home.
You didn't notice of course, you were too caught up in your own self righteousness and pig headed-ness to realize that it was NOT them that betrayed you but vice versa. As the decades passed, more and more communities left as you were blinded by your own beliefs and bigotry. Thousands of educated Muslim families too decided to get going with the wave of exodus, willing to deny you as their loved one, desperately seeking new nationalities where ever they could.
I watched this... I watched the entire Goan community leave. 98% of the Christian, Parsi and Chinese friends in school with me, had migrated by the time we got to college. Their parents sold everything they had, left stable corporate jobs to once again start from scratch either filling gas at petrol stations in Canada or making subway sandwiches, they obviously felt anything was better than being around you. Those who had chosen to stay with you, would realize later that they chose the devil instead of the deep blue sea. At least the deep blue sea is a much more tolerant environment.
As the years went by, we patiently hoped you would change. Yes, many of us still had our hopes on you.... Many still believed your good side would get the better of your bad. We loved you.... We wanted to see you successful and prosperous. But you let us down, each and every one of us with that ray of hope. You became increasingly darker and aggressive. You became a shelter for the wicked instead of the weak. Thieves, Murderers, liars and killers walked your lands rampantly with your constitution in their back pockets.
Justice was made blind and honesty became an endangered species. Yet, you publicly proclaimed your righteousness. You publicly killed the weaker sex in the name of honor, you publicly burnt churches and temples, you publicly defended your faith by burning anything that came your way including villages with innocent women and children.
And as if that wasn't enough, you turned to killing people who even shared the same faith, if they dared to follow a different sect or doctrine. Somehow you felt that if people were different from you, they didn't deserve to live. Your hatred became so ingrained into your subconscious that parts and provinces within you, began to hate and kill each other. Your own physical body at war with itself.
If one's arms and legs start fighting amongst themselves, the body soon becomes useless and ceases any productive function. I have to be brutally honest here Pakistan, what you have become today, is the darkest, most vile nation that exists in the world with numerous enemies and even more fair weather friends. The friends who will chew you and spit you out while they pat you on the back. They will use and abuse your every resource and potential until you are left worthless and crippled with a cancer that will slowly consume every part of you.
Your birth was a bloody one and it seems that to this day, your soils thirst for blood. Everyday, dozens of innocent people who love and believe in you, die needlessly. Bomb blasts and target killings are your new social norms. Even those who share your faith are threatened by your version of misinterpreted faith that gets a kick out of falsely convicting a mentally retarded minor on blasphemy charges. I wonder what nefarious activities we will hear of next.
I am now glad that the universe and gods conspired to take me far far away from you. You are not good for anyone's health or sanity.... I have come to hate you for all that you have become, but will still love you always for all that you could have been.

Sincerely disappointed,

Natasha De Sousa

Amarnath Yatra

Today , lets continue our teerth Yatra with the holy Amarnath yatra. We all are blessed to visit this sacred abode of Lord Shiva.

Amarnath yatra is considered as the most sacred pilgrimage in the Hindu religion. The journey is of 141 km from Srinagar, the Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated at a height of 4,175m. The yatra is mainly conducted in the month of July and August every year. The yatra is dedicated to Lord Shiva, one of the Holy Trinity.

The story narrated by people about the discovery of this Holy Cave is of a Gujjar ( shepherd) Buta Malik . He is given the credit of discovering this Holy Cave . Story goes like this , that a saint gave Buta Malik a bag full of Coal. On reaching his home when he opened the bag , to his utter surprise the bag was full of gold coins . This made him overwelmed with joy. He ran to thank the Saint . But, what he found was that the Saint had disappeared . Instead , he found The Holy Cave and Shiv Lingam there in . He announced the discovery of this to the Villagers. Then onwards this has become the sacred place of Pilgrimage .

The ancient epics narrate an other story which goes like this. The valley of Kashmir was under water .It was a big lake. Kashyap Rishi drained the water through number of rivers and rivulets . In those days Bhrigu Rishi came that way on a visit to The Himalyas. He was the first to have Darshans of this Holy Cave . When people heard of the Lingam, Amarnath for them became Shiva's abode and a Centre of pilgrimage . Since then Lacs of devotees perform the pilgrimage through tough terrain and avail eternal happiness.

PAHALGAM : It is 96 KM from Srinagar .This distance can be covered by car,bus or taxi. Pahalgam is known all over the world for its beauty. It is small town situated on the banks of Lidder River. It is surrounded by high mountains. All essentials can be bought here. Good Hotels are available for accommodation. However the arrangements for stay and Langar are also made by the Non Government Service Organisations.

The distance from Pahalgam to Chandanwari is 16km. The route is good .It can be covered by road transport also. Mini buses are also available from Pahalgam to reach Chandanwari. The trail runs along the Lidder River . The route is scenic. Food is available here. Pilgrims camp at Pahalgam or Chandanwari on the first night .

Chandanwari is the starting point of the Amarnath Yatra, which takes place every year in the month of Sawan (Rain).

The zig-zag route leading to Pissu Top

View of Chandanwari Side taken from Pissutop

PISSU TOP : As the Yatra proceed further from Chandanwari one climbs a height to reach Pissu Top. It is said that to be first to reach for darshan of Bhole Nath Shivshankar there was a war between Devtas and Rakshas . With the power of Shiv , devtas could kill the rakshas in such large number that the heap of their dead bodies has resulted in this high mountain.

Beautiful View of Sheshnag Lake

SHESHNAG:This second day's trek of 12 kms from Chandanwari is through Pissu Top and spectacular, primeval countryside, and reaches Sheshnag – a mountain which derives its name from its Seven Peaks, resembling the heads of the mythical snake.

The Journey to Sheshnag follows steep inclines on the right bank of a cascading stream and wild scenery untouched by civilisation. The second night's camp at Sheshnag overlooks the deep blue waters of Sheshnag lake, and glaciers beyond it.

There are legends of love and revenge too associated with Sheshnag, and at the camp these are narrated by campfires . The stillness of a pine scented Himalayan night increases your inner joy. Yatris can take bath and get their fatigue alleviated. It is beautiful and scenic.

From Sheshnag one has to climb steep height up across Mahagunas Pass at 4276 mtrs.(14000 ft) for 4.6 KM and then descending to the meadow lands of Panchtarni at a height of 3657 mtrs (12000 ft).

The last camp enroute to the Holy Cave is made here on third day. Here one faces cold winds which cause the skin to crack .

Hence cold cream / Vaseline are very useful for protection of skin. Some Yatris are also effected by deficiency of oxygen .Some may get the feeling of vomiting .

So dry fruit like Allu Bukhara ,sour and sweet eatables like Lemon are useful to control these symptoms . The route to Mahagunas is full of rivulets , water falls , springs .

PANCHTARNI:Panchtarni is a very beautiful place in the feet of BHAIRAV MOUNT. Five Rivers flow here . It is said that the five rivers origanated from Lord Shiva's Hairs (Jataon).

Pilgrims camp at Panchtarni on the 3rd night

The Holy Cave of Shri Amarnath is only 6 kms from Panchtarni. As there is no place to stay hence the pilgrims start in the early hours of the morning after their stay at Panchtarni

Pilgrims between Panchtarni and the Amarnath Caves

Pilgrims almost at the Amarnath Caves .On the way to The Holy Cave one comes across the Sangam of Amravati and Panchtarni. Some pilgrims take bath at Amravati near holy cave to become pious before going for Darshan. Near the cave is found white soil known as Bhasam. It is the most beloved soil of Shiv ji . The pilgrims apply this Holy soil to their body and then go for Shivlingam Darshan.

View of Holy Amarnath Cave as seen from out side

The trek to Amarnath, in the month of sharavan ( July–August) has the devout flock to this incredible shrine, where the image of Shiva, in the form of a Lingam, is formed naturally of an Ice Stalagmite, which waxes and wanes with the Moon's cycle . By its side are fascinating, two more Ice Lingams, that of Maa Parvati and of their son, Ganesha .

 Inside View of Holy Cave

Behind the discovery of the Holy Shrine lies an interesting story. Centuries ago Maa Parvati asked Shivji to let her know why and when he started wearing the beads of heads (Mund Mala), to which Bhole Shankar replied, "whenever you are born I add more heads to my bead". Parvati said, "I die again and again, but you are Immortal. Please tell me the reason behind this". "Bhole Shankar replied that for this you will have to listen to the Amar Katha"

Shiv agreed to narrate the detailed story to Maa Parvati. He started for a lonely place where no living being could listen to the immortal secret and ultimately chose Amarnath Cave. In the hush-hush, he left his Nandi (the Bull which He used to ride) at Pahalgam (Bail gaon). At Chandwari , he released Moon (Chand) from his hairs (Jataon). At the banks of Lake Sheshnag, he released the snakes. He decided to leave his Son Ganesha at Mahagunas Parvat (Mahaganesh Hill). At Panjtarni, Shivji left the Five Elements behind (Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Sky) which give birth to life and of which he is the Lord.

After leaving behind all these, Bhole Shankar entered the Holy Amarnath Cave along with Parvati Maa and took his Samadhi. To ensure that no living being is able to hear the Immortal Tale, he created Kalagni and ordered him to spread fire to eliminate every living thing in and around the Holy Cave. After this he started narrating the secret of immortality to Maa Parvati. But as a matter of chance a pair of pigeons overhead the story and became immortal.

View Pigeons In Holy Cave : Many pilgrims report seeing the pair of pigeons at the Holy Shrine even today and are amazed as to how these birds survive in such a cold and high altitude area

May the Swayambhu (Shiva) Lingam bless our souls with His divine darshan and shower His grace upon us to fill our lives with peace , love and contentment in our hearts.

Baba's Miracle of Lighting the Lamps
Baba, the Heavenly Father in human form descended to Shirdi to protect the weak and the poor. He lit the Lamp of Wisdom to dispel the darkness of ignorance. Baba was fond of lights. Every evening He used to illumine every corner of Dwarakamayi by keeping lighted lamps in rows. He used to procure necessary oil to light the lamps from the local traders. One day the traders lied to Baba that there was no stock of oil. But Baba did not felt annoyed with them. He smiled and returned to the mosque with an empty oil can. Curious as they were, the traders followed Baba to see how He would lit the lamps without oil. Baba poured water into the oil can with a couple of oil drops in it, shook it, drank the water, spit into the oil can and poured the water into the earthen lamps and lit them. Wonder of the wonders, the lamps burnt luminously throughout the night to the utter amazement of the traders who were awe-struck. Baba gently exhorted them, 'If you are unwilling to give, do not give. But do not tell a lie. You could as well say 'No'. Ashamed, the traders prostrated before Baba and sought His forgiveness. The lights of wisdom were lit by Baba in their hearts. In that celestial light, the people of Shirdi sensed Baba's Divinity. Baba is an embodiment of love. Is not He? They were all forgiven and embraced by the Merciful Baba.

Parthasarathi

PARTHASARATHI
(Raga Bhim plas)

This is a song to the universal Guru, Krishna, who was also the charioteer of Partha or Arjuna, who has given us the immortal teaching of the Bhagavad Gita.

Parthasarathe, Pavanapuresha,
Vanamaleeswara vaathalayesha,
Pandu putraanam rana sampaalaya,
Paanchala raajakumari rakshaka,
Arjuna saarathe geethacharya,
Parama guro Krishna shishyastheham.

Vande Sri guro, vande sad Guro,
Vande priya Guro, vande mama Guro,
Krishnam vande jagat Guro
Krishnam vande jagat Guro
Krishnam vande jagat Guro

Hail to Lord Krishna, the preceptor of the world,
Whose broad chest is adorned with the mark called the srivatsa.
Who carries the conch and discus in his hands,
And who is resplendent with a vanamala (garland of wild flowers), round his neck.

O Parthasarathy, You are the Lord of Guruvayoor,
The Lord of Vanamali,
The Lord of the temple of winds (the human body).
You saved the sons of Pandu in the mighty war,
You saved Draupadi, the princess of Panchala,
O charioteer of Arjuna, teacher of the Gita ,
O Krishna! You are the supreme Guru and I am your disciple.
Hail to the Guru,
Hail to the true Guru,
Hail to the beloved Guru,
Hail to my own Guru,
Hail to Krishna, the preceptor of the world!

Ref. Guruvayoor is a town in Kerala, which has a famous temple of Krishna.

O Beloved Vanamali! How will you come to me?
Will you come on a raft or on a cloud or in the chariot of my mind?
How should I welcome the King of kings?
What can I offer the God of gods?
I have only my tears, caught in the cup of my heart
In the bridal hall of life, I have wandered far and wide
Holding the wedding garland in my hand,
Searching for a suitable groom,
Many births have I taken and many times died,
Countless are the garbs I have donned.
Searching desperately for my lover.
But never did I find the perfect person. (Uttama Purusha)

O Help of the Helpless!,
Sole support of the abandoned!
Wilt thou not accept my wedding garland?
Wilt thou not wed this jeevatma (embodied soul)
And place the garland round her neck.?

O beloved Vanamali!
How will you come to me?

Lord Vanamali

 ORU MUKHAM MATRAM

One melody alone do I hear.
O Vanamali! Thy beauteous form alone do I nurse in my heart.
O thou enchanting blue baby,
Wilt thou come and be rocked in the cradle of my heart?
Wilt thou remove the darkness of my ignorance?
Wilt thou come and play in the courtyard of my mind?

One face alone do I see,
One song alone do I hear.

O lotus-eyed dweller of Ambadi (Vrindavan),
O Thou who sleeps on a peepul leaf!
O Thou of blissful countenance!
O Krishna!
Thy name alone,

Thy feet alone!
Are my sole recourse!

O Shoure (Krishna)! Please don’t make me an orphan!
O thou who art the sole support of the abandoned!
Please don’t make me an orphan!

Birth after birth have I wandered through the desert of life,
Searching for Thee,
I’m but an unknown flower, faded and worn,
Unknowingly I have reached thy doorstep,
How can I offer myself to thee?
How can I be used in they puja?
O Shoure! (Krishna)! Help of the helpless!
Please don’t abandon me!

In the carnival of life I missed my way
And fell into a nightmare that lasted for eons!
O Lord of Lakshmi! Wilt thou not stretch thy hand and haul me to the shore?
O Ocean of compassion! Wilt thou not come running to save me?

O thou delight of my eyes!
Thou alone art my mother, husband, friend and relation,
No sons or grandsons do I have other than thee!
Having given up all my blood relations,
I have sought refuge at thy feet alone,
Will thou not accept me O Beloved Vanamali,
Wilt thou not come running to me, my darling Vanamali!

O Love! Where have you been searching for Me?
I do not dwell in the temple or ashram,
I dwell in your heart.
I cannot be found in rituals and flowers,
Nor in chants and austerities.
I don’t live in houses nor do I live in forests.
My residence is your heart alone!

O Love! Where have you been searching for me?
From the temple of Guruvayoor up to the temple of Badrinath you have been looking for me,
Don’t you know that I am not to be found in temples or holy rivers?
All through your journey, I was walking beside you.
In fact I have always lived in the temple of your heart
In the form of Vanamali!
O Love! Where have you been searching for Me?

TO THEE WHO STOLE THE BUTTER AND MILK

To thee who stole the butter and milk,
To thee who’s clad in yellow silk,
To thee I give my salutation,
O Krishna! O Krishna! O Krishna!

To thee who danced on Kaliya’s hood,
To thee the cause of evil and good,
To thee I give my salutations,
O Krishna! O Krishna! O Krishna!

Thou Lord and god of Vanamali,
Thou saviour of Draupadi,
Thou Partha’s saarathi,
To thee I give my salutations,
O Krishna! O Krishna! O Krishna!

To thee! Only to thee!
To thee! Only to thee!
Do I give my salutations,
My prostrations, my salutations, my prostrations.
To thee! To thee! To thee!
O Krishna! O Krishna! O Krishna!
