Bhagawad Gita Dhyanam

(Those who do Parayana of Bhagawad Gita, should chant this prayer before starting reading Gita. This remarkable prayer brings out the greatness of Bhagawad Gita brilliantly. I do not know who is the author of this Dhyanam.)

1.Om Parthaya prathi boditham bhagawathaa narayanena swayam,
Vyasaena grahitham Purana muninaa madhye Mahabaratham,
Advaithamrutha varshaneem bhagawtheem ashta dasa dhyayineem,
Ambaa thwaam anusandadhami bhagwad geethaa bhava dweshineem.

That which was taught to Arjuna by Lord Narayana himself,
Which was written by the epic sage Vyasa in the middle of Mahabaratha,
Oh Mother goddess who showers the nectar of advaitha called the Bhagawad Gita ,
Which has eighteen chapters , I meditate on you mother who removes all past karma

2. Namosthuthe Vyasa vishala budhe, phullaravindata tha pathra nethra,
Yena thwayaa Bharatha thaila poorna prajjvalitho jnanamaya pradheepa.

Salutations to Vyasa who has immense intellect , who has eyes like petals of a lotus flower,
Who has filled up the oil to the lamp of Mahabaratha , and lighted it to pinpoint wisdom.

3.Prapanna parijataya , totra vetraika panaye ,
Jnana mudhraaya Krishnaaya geethamritha duhe nama.

Salutations to Krishna who is a wish giving tree, who holds a cane to drive the cattle ,
Who also shows the seal of Jnana , and gave us all the nectar of Gita.

4.Sarvaopanishadho gaavo dogdhaa Gopala Nandana,
Parthoo vathsa sudheer bhokthaa dugdam Geetamritham mahath.

All the Upanishads are the cows and Krishna is the one who milks them,
Arjuna is the calf , The devotees are the consumers of the great nectar of Gita.

5.Vasudeva sutham devam kamsa Chanoora mardhanam,
Devaki paramanandam Krishnam vande Jagat Gurum.

I salute the teacher of the world , who is the son of Vasudeva ,
Who killed Kamsa and Chanoora and is the one who gave divine joy to Devaki.

6.Bheeshma drona thata jayadradha jalaa , Gandhaara neelothphala,
Shalyaaa grahavathee , kripena vahanee , karnena Velakulaa,
Aswathama Vikarnaa ghora Makaraa Duryodhana varthinee,
Sotheerno kalu Pandavai , rana nadhee kaivarthaka Kesava.

Bheeshma and Drona were two banks , Jayadrada was the water, Sakuni the king of Gandhara was the blue lotus,
Salya was the crocodile , Kripa was the tide , Karna was the mighty wave,
Aswathama and Vikarna were the dangerous alligators and Duryodhana was the whirlpool,
And the Pandavas crossed this river of war with Krishna as their helmsman.

7.Parashrayaa vacha sarojamamalam Geethartha gandothkatam,
Nanakhyanaka kesaram harikatha sambodhanaa bodhitham,
Loke sajjana shat padairaharaha pepeyamaanam mudhaa,
Bhooyad Bharatha pankajam kali mala pradhwamsina shreyase.

Let the lotus flower of Mahabharata, which arose from the water,
Which are the words of son of Parasara, which has the pollen grains of different stories,
Which is taught in the form of stories of Lord Vishnu ,
That is drunk by the honey bee of very good people,
Help those who want to remove the ills of Kali age.

8.Mookam karothi vaachaalam , pankhum lankayathe girim,
Yath krupa thaham vandhe Paramananda madhavam.

I salute that Madhava of divine joy , whose graceful mercy,
Makes the dumb as master of words and the lame to cross the mountain.

9.Yam brahmaVaruna indrua Rudra maruthsthunvanthi divyai sthavai,
Vedai saang padakrama upanishadair gayanthi yam SAmaga,
Dhyanasthitha thadgadaina manasa pasyanthi yam Yogino,
Yasyaantham na vidhu surasura ganaa devaaya thasmai nama.

I salute him who is worshipped by divine chants by Brahma, Varuna, Indra , Rudra and Vayu,
Who is pleased by singers of Sama Veda by singing Vedas and Upanishads by following the word sequence,
Who is seen by yogis who are absorbed in him, with their mind merging in him,
And whose end is not known even by the hoards of devas and Asuras.

pārthāya pratibodhitāḿ bhagavatā nārāyaṇena svayaḿ
vyāsena grathitāḿ purāṇa-muninā madhye mahābhārate
advaitāmṛta-varṣiṇīḿ bhagavatīm aṣṭādaśādhyāyinīḿ
amba tvām anusandadhāmi bhagavad-gīte bhava-dveṣiṇīm

namo'stu te vyāsa viśāla-buddhe
phullāravindāyātapatra-netre
yena tvayā bhārata-taila-pūrṇaḥ
prajvalito jñānamayaḥ pradīpaḥ

prapanna-parijātāya
totra-vetraika-pāṇaye
jñāna-mudrāya kṛṣṇāya
gītāmṛta-duhe namaḥ

sarvopaniṣado gāvo
dogdhā gopāla-nandanaḥ
pārtho vatsaḥ sudhīr bhoktā
dugdhaḿ gītāmṛtaḿ mahat

vasudeva-sutaḿ devaḿ
kaḿsa-cāṇūra-mardanam
devakī-paramānandaḿ
kṛṣṇaḿ vande jagad-gurum

(6)
bhīṣma-droṇa-taṭā jayadratha-jalā gāndhārī-nīlotpalā
śalya-grāhavatī kṛpeṇa vahinī karṇena velākula
aśvattāma-vikarṇa-ghora-makarā duryodhanāvartinī
sottīrṇā khalu pāṇḍavārṇava-nadī kaivartakaḥ keśvaḥ

pārāśarya-vacaḥ sarojam amalaḿ gītārtha-gandhotkaṭaḿ
nānākhyānaka-keśaraḿ hari-kathā-sambodhanābodhitam
loke sajjana-ṣaṭpadair aharahaḥ pepīyamānaḿ mudā
bhūyād bhārata-pańkajaḿ kalimala-pradhvaḿsanaḿ śreyase

mūkaḿ karoti vācālaḿ
pańguḿ lańghāyate girim
yat-kṛpā tam ahaḿ vande
paramānanda-mādhavam

(9)
yaḿ brahmā varuṇendra-rudra-marutaḥ stunvanti divyaiḥ stavair
vedaiḥ sāńga-pada-kramopaniṣadair gāyanti yaḿ sāma-gāḥ
dhyānāvasthita-tad-gatena manasā paśyanti yaḿ yogino
yasyāntaḿ na viduḥ surāsura-gaṇā devāya tasmai namaḥ

TRANSLATION
1) O Bhagavad-gita, thou hast been instructed to Arjuna, the son of Prtha by the Lord Himself and afterwards thee were included within the Mahabharata by the ancient sage Vyasa.  Thy eighteen divine chapters are a shower of the immortal nectar of the wisdom of the Absolute.  O mother, destroyer of man's rebirth into the darkness of this mortal world, upon thee I meditate.

2) Obeisances to You, O Vyasa, thou art of mighty intellect, and thine eyes are large as the petals of the full-blown lotus.  It was by thee that the oil-filled lamp of knowledge of the Mahabharata was lit.

3) I offer obeisances unto Lord Krsna, the refuge of ocean-born Laksmi and all who take refuge at His lotus feet. His one hand holds a staff for driving cows, and the other hand is raised, the thumb touching the tip of the forefinger, indicating divine knowledge.  He is the milker of the immortal nectar of the Bhagavad-gita.

4) The Upanisads are as a herd of cows, Lord Krsna, son of a cowherd, is their mother, Arjuna is the calf, the supreme nectar of the Gita is the milk, and the wise man of purified intellect is the drinker.

5) I offer my obeisances to Lord Krsna, the beloved son of Vasudeva, destroyer of the demons Kamsa and Canura, the supreme bliss of Mother Devaki and the spiritual master of the universe.

6) Of the terrifying river of the battlefield of Kuruksetra over which the Pandavas victoriously crossed, Bhisma and Drona were it's high banks, Jayadratha was the river's water, the King of Gandhara, the blue water-lily: there were sharks such as salya, Krpa was the current, Karna, the mighty waves, Asvattham and Vikarna, the dreadful alligators, and Duryodhana, the very whirlpool, but Lord Krsna was the ferryman!

7) May the spotless lotus of the words of Vyasa that grows on the eternal waters of the words of Lord Hari, with its filaments of various tales of heroes and which is rightly endowed with the sweet fragrance of the explanations of the Bhagavad-gita, it's nectar beign quaffed with pleasure daily in this world by saintly persons who are compared to so many nectar-seeking bumble-bees and which destroys all the sins of the age of Kali - May this lotus of the Mahabharata bestow on us the highest good.

8) I offer my respectful obeisances unto the Supreme Personality of Godhead Krsna, the transcendentally blissful husband of the goddess of fortune, whose mercy turns the dumb into eloquent speakers and enables to lame to cross mountains.

9) Unto that personality whom Brahma, Varuna, Indra, Rudra and the Maruts praise by chanting transcendental hymns and reciting the Vedas with all their corollaries, pada-kramas and Upanisads, to whom the chanters of the Sama Veda always sing, whom the perfected yogis see within their minds after fixing themselves in trance and absorbing themselves within Him, and whose limit can never be found by any demigod or demon — unto that Supreme Personality of Godhead I offer my humble obeisances.

REMARKS/EXTRA INFORMATION:
Verse 5 is the first verse of Adi Sankaracarya’s Krsnastakam.

The ninth verse is often sung with the suffixed-line “śrī guru dīna-tāraam offering obeisances to the “spiritual master that is the redeemer of the fallen.”

The final verse comes from the Srimad Bhagavatam Canto 12 Chapter 13 Verse 1.
