TIK CHORAM

TIK CHORAM
4th day of bright fort night of magha is dedicated to the worship of Tripura Sundari, literally meaning "she who is lovely in the three worlds", is one of the most important goddesses worshipped in the Tantric tradition in Kashmir. Her cult is particularly popular among the Tiku clan of Kashmiri Pandits who celebrate her festival on Tiky chorum. The surname ‘Tiku’ is derived from "trika", according to popular etymology. She is the Isht Deviof Tiku’s {Tiku’s; a Kashmiri rendering of trik, a clan of Aryan Saraswat Brahmins of Kashmir} and a cross section of the Aryan Saraswat Brahmins of Kashmir. In Kashmir the main shrines of the goddess are Tripursundari Temple at foothills of Gopadiri {Durga Nag} and Devsar {Anantnag District}. In fact she is the Goddess well known in Bharatvarsha and Kashmir, though the Mahatmaya, Bhija Mantra’s and
Stotras, peculiar to Kashmir, are different.
On this day TAHAR or yellow rice cooked with turmeric powder. Tahar is also relished with spicy non vegetarian generally liver cooked with potatoes called Ollu Tcharvun in Kashmiri dish. It is laced with hot clarified butter or mustard oil and a pinch of common salt is also added to it. It is a symbol of kashmir’s composite culture .. They eat it within the family and distribute this ‘ Tahar’ to neighbours on birthdays apart from carrying it to Ashrams of saints so as to distribute it to devotees as Prasada .
Her devotees believe that she combines in her form all three Goddesses, Mahalakshmi, Maha-sarswati and Mahakali, and all three of her cosmic functions. However, she is also worshipped by the entire Brahmin community in Kashmir and from very early times. On this day children are initiated into religious education.
