Kaawe Punyim Mubarak🌹🌹🌺 *KAAW........PUNIM* 🌺🌹🌹🌺🌹 *M U B A R A K* 🌹🌺🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷*Kaaw Punim* is one of the unique festivals of *Kashmiri Pandits* & is observed every year on *Maagh Purnima*. This *festival* is austere, simple & indigenous in character. Unlike other festivals, there is no ostentation on this occasion. It is not being celebrated in the same fashion, *as it once used to be*,when Kashmiri Pandits lived in Kashmir Valley (before migration in 90's). Many such festivals, are celebrated with less fervor and enthusiasm, *or* forgotten now, due to detachment from *community's cultural roots*.*Before exodus* from the valley, Kashmiri Pandits used to celebrate *kaaw punim* with special charm, especially *children*, who anxiously waited for this occasion. They would make *Kaaw-Potul* (a hand made ladle/spoon from a long stick and hay) for *pious offerings to crows* from the windows of upper storeys or balcony of their respective houses.*While offering the food to crows, the children would chant..................*Kaaw Bhatt Kaawo,Khechrey Kaawo,Gangbala Shraana Karith,Gur Maeche Tyoka Karith,Walle bha Saanay Lare Pyeth,Daal Batte Khyene.*It means, O erudite crow , O Khichri eater* (a mixture of rice & moong daal cooked together); after having a dip in river Ganga, put tilak (of clay) on your forehead, and come to our house, to have daal & rice.In Kashmir, the women of every Pandit family traditionally used to offer fresh cooked food to crows, every day, before serving to the family members. A *Kaaw-Paet*(smooth wooden piece) hanging on front wall of a house signified that, "that particular house belongs to a Kashmiri Pandit. Many myths are attached with Crow in Hindu mythology. One is of *Kak-Bhushandi*,who was a pious man devoted to Lord Ram, but was cursed to become a Crow. The crow is considered to be very curious bird. Kak-Cheshta & Kak-Snaan, are idiomatic expressions of *curiosity and bathing* like a Crow *respectively in Sanskrit language*(Crow only dips his head, while having bath).According to Hindu belief, Crows are representatives of our ancestors, Yama ,Dharamraja, planet Saturn & Krishna. By offering food to crows, they get pleased. The *Neelmat Puraan*, which is our source of cultural history says, "Poornmasyam Tu Maaghsya Shraadam Kritva Tiler-narah, Kakanaam Bhojnam Dadyaat Prabhootam Bali Sanyutam (Verse 516)" *it means* , "On full moon-night of Maagh, a man should perform Shraadh with Sesame, and give enough pious food to crows". It is also believed that *Kaaw-Punim* is birthday of Crow.Hindus see *God* in many creatures; be it Crow, Snake ,or human being. As such, offering food to crows is equal to "Jeeva-Karuna" , i.e. having pity on every creature. Also it is equivalent to Bhoot-Yajna, i.e. one of Panch Mahayajnas (fivefold duties) a family man should perform every day.It is a general belief , that Crows serve as a hot-line medium between living & deceased ones. We should, therefore, maintain the tradition of offering food to crows and other animals, to make departed one's happy, so that they continue to shower their blessings and good wishes upon us. The ubiquitous crow does not eat alone, but alongwith his fellows. This activity of Crow is fellow feeling and community care. The Kashmiri Pandit community may not be celebrating this *festive occasion*with great charm , due to uprooting from their homeland *or* advancement of *Western culture* , but its significance is even much more relevant today, when human values have faded away. Let it be either out of sheer compassion *or* out of blind beliefs perpetuated since ages , it is clear that this festival gives us a message fellow feeling is transacted through collective sharing and community caring , which is must for *our survival in exile*--On 31 Jan 2018 2:29 pm, <kashmir-interchange@ googlegroups.com> wrote:

Sheri Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah turned out to be the pied piper of
Kashmir. He hypnotized his followers to dance to the tune 'Alea krengha
vanguen karengha bub karengha bub karengha'. He treated his followers like
rats of Hamelin. He challenged his opponents to win against his nominee-a
donkey or an electric pole. People were made to believe that he had mystic
powers to cure cancer patient with his sputum and handicapped with the lash
of his stick. Kashmiris believe canards more than the real. Following of
majority of the people made him arrogant. At the fag end of his life he
became power crazy. In his second term, corruption was at its rampant.
Medical and Engineering seats were sold to the highest bidders. Same was
true for allotment of residential plots. Last nail in the coffin was to
handover power and party to his most incapable son who ruined the both. He
ditched his colleagues who had suffered imprisonment with him. Those who
mourned his death and cried:"Asi kusoo trevieth bubo" say now "Sheikh
subunie kubur kashirie nebuer". He cared more for his family than for his
mammoth followers, the state and the party.

Yes there was a hotel, whose name I do not recall, also owned by Duranis.
Both the hotel and Duran Cycle were before Women's College, in Badshah Bridge to Dal Gate direction of the road. Janki Nath Durani, the owner, wasthe father of late professors Jagan Nath and Hirday Nath (Gandhi College).

(My Hero)
1960 the Degreeexamination was over and so was end of the student career. The result wasexpected any time within a period of three months. To use the transit period fruitfully,I joined Kashyap Girls High School as a teacher on a remuneration of Rs.36 permonth. Soon J L Pandita (The retired Senior Superintendent of Police) became mycolleague. He was already a graduate with brilliant academic record. Our monthlysalaries differed by two rupees. Hopefully, subject to favourable result in myDegree examination my salary would also be at par with J L Pundit’s. Parity in our salaries was due to the parityin our respective qualifications. The one was a graduate and the other was yetan under-graduate. Pandita even today genuinely taunts at me that he replacedme as HOD Mathematics. I digest his taunt with utter humility.
One day for better looks Iborrowed two neckties from someone; one for myself and the other for mycolleague, who by then had become my friend. The lender taught us technique ofthe knot.
The School is on the roadside.Windows of the building open towards the road and front of the building with arunning verandah is towards its courtyard. It was first day of the next weekwhen we finally completed the British dress code. On way to school, some studentovertook us to break the news of the day. To our embarrassment, all the inmatesof the school; both students and teachers rushed from the courtyard where theyhad assembled for morning prayers, rushed upstairs and thronged by the windowsto have a first look of the unbelievable with their naked eyes. We marchedahead, took right turn and entered into the School courtyard. Those who hadthronged the windows rushed to the verandah to have a second look. We wentstraight to the office to mark our presence. Pandita fabled in nervousness. Hesaid, “Let us submit leave application for the day as we have to attend somemarriage function.” I did not agree with his excuse and preferred to face thesituation boldly.
The same week, both of us purchasedbrand new Raleigh Bicycles @ Rs 210/each from Duran Cycle at Exchange Road ondeferred payments. Brij Nath Durani owner of the shop was kind enough to offerus interest free facility of deferred payments with EMI (Each monthly installment)of Rs.10. Maqbool, his mechanic used to come to us every month on pay-day tocollect the installment. He was grateful for regular payment of installments.Cycle loan was liquidated on time. Now our next desire was for a leather jacket.Accustomed to the dress code, without any inhibition we continued with the tie.1939 born, I satiated my desire for the brown sober jacket on my 22ndbirthday on 19th February, 1961.
Both of us for betterprospectus changed our schools with little effect on our togetherness. Seeingus always together, some of our friends named our unity as that of Little Johnwith Robinson. I joined Vishwa Bharti High School @ Rs.70/PM. It was a bigjump, but it was only the beginning. I got a call from the Principal ofNational High School. He told me that being student of the School, I owed myservices to National High School. I had no reason to deny the offer especiallywhen the jump was still higher at par with the Government grade with a start ofRs.96/PM.
One day, I got a call fromthe Principal. He said that he was impressed by my dress code and I shouldcontinue to wear the tie. Seemingly, young and smart at 22, I was made in chargeof the Cricket Team and the Boating club.
In charge of the boat crew, I commanded thecrew in the river procession in honour of the reception given to Pundit JawaharlalNehru, the first Prime Minister of India. I believe it was his last visit toKashmir. The next day almost for one week, the crew had to practice for boatingin the Dal Lake.
After his retirement as ateacher from the Government, Mater Aqlal Raina from Purshyar joined NationalHigh School as a teacher. May be because of our age variation 22-60, though mycolleague, I had no interaction with Master Ji as he was called by his juniors.
Master Ji joined the Crewfor practice at Nehru Park. He, in white loose silken shirt took position onthe front end of the boat and the rest naked in bathing shorts took theirrespective positions. I had taken position at the steering end. The boat wasrowed away from the Nehru Park and it was near ‘Kotur-Khanea’. One of the crewmembers, 10th class student, the late Shiban Shishoo, a naughty boyof his age(Later on a Police officer) said to Master Ji,” Master Ji, tohiecha mahra chanth(Master Ji, are you a swimmer?).Master Ji, a seasoned teacherwith a treasure of experience and knowledge of child psychology, said, “Shibnea….Iknow how to swim, but don’t do any mischief here farther from Nehru Park wherenobody can rescue you.” Instantaneously, Shiban gave a few jolts and the boat turnedturtle. Barring Master Ji, all the crew members started beating the water, little knowing how to swim. After many cries, State Road Transport Service Boatcrew rescued the drowning crew. Until arrival of the rescue team, Master Ji gaveshoulder to Nazir and many others.
Master Ji avoided acatastrophe. In his absence the day would have turned into the Day of Tragedy.
I believe Nazir must haveretired as an SE. Shiban died very young a natural death.
I revere Master Ji as myHero. Peace be to his soul, a Great Man, Shani Pushyar.
The next day on rehearsal,I proved too weak to hold the steering (Num rutuen). The front end of the boat overrode the adjacent boat to my left and the rare end the boat adjacent to myright. The overriding became contagious in a chain and for no fault of theirs, all got disqualified.
