Doodhpathri

Doodhpathri is a beautiful and enchanting bowl shaped valley of Jammu and Kashmir. It is situated 40 kms from Srinagar and is definitely an unexplored place in Kashmir. Lofty mountains, velvet-like green meadows, sky touching trees, crystal-clear water and life-giving air all make Doodhpathri an unmatched and unparalleled Tourist Destination. 

Origin :

The origin of the name Doodhpathri is derived from Doodh meaning “Milk” and pathri meaning “Rocks/Stones”. Actually the water flows with a strong pressure and when it strikes against the stones, it forms a milky-white appearance; hence the name. A flowing river resounds with soft wind passing through the pine trees of the enclosures of the valley. It is also called as a “valley of milk” because it produces rich milk in large quantity.

Doodhpathri however is a recent inclusion in the Jammu Kashmir tourist map. This is the reason that the place is not overcrowded and not many tourists visit here. However, it has become a real hit among the local population, who find it a welcome step. The road from Khansahib area in Budgam to the Doodhpathri is not in a good condition. There is not a full-fledged market or any hotel in the area, so the trip is always going to last for a day only and you need to pack your lunch. Tea and snacks are available in the shops run by local people.

Inhabited by no one except a few Gujars, (a pastoral community, living in the hills across various mountainous terrain in India) you can take a tent, find a nice spot, set up camp and have a sing-song by the bonfire. It’s safer to stay close to the few small shops that have come up and near the Gujar’s huts. 

The best time to travel Doodhpathri is between May- July as the weather is pleasant and preachy. The temperature varies between 10-15 degrees during this time. Travelling to the area can be hectic, but the place is worth the trouble.
