Naga Sadhus are group of shaivite monk or followers of Lord Shiva who live in the Himalayan caves and appear in public during the Kumbh Mela. They carry tridents crowned with human skulls.
Naga means ‘naked’ and hence they
are known as Naga Babas or Warrior-Ascetics. Naga in Sanskrit means
mountain, people residing in and around mountains are known as Naga.
Naga Sadhus were founded by Dattatreya in treta yug but Shankaracharya was the first one to organize the Naga Sadhus to protect Hindu Sanatan Dharma that’s why they are also known as Warrior.
Naga Sadhus live in the ashram and temples of the
Akhara. Some of them spend their life in the caves of the Himalayas or
the high mountains for austerity. According to the order of the akharas,
they also walk on foot. At the same time, make a hut on a village’s
mer, and wash the fumes.
The Kumbh Mela is public event in which Naga Sadhus come down from Himalayan caves and they are the first one to take bath in holy water.
They do not like to live near the common people society because of influence of lust, sex, and worldly attractions. They live in Akahara. The Juna Akhara is the oldest and the largest Akhara, which consists of different Sadhus and Sadhavis, including Naga Babas. They smoke marijuana using a Chillum.
The process of becoming a Naga Sadhu is difficult and lengthy. The process of joining the caste of Naga Sadhus
takes about six years. During this time new members do not wear
anything other than a nappy. After taking the last step in the Kumbh
Mela, they also sacrifice the diapers and live only for a lifetime
