Aghori

The Aghori (Sanskrit aghora)[2] are ascetic Shaiva sadhus. The Aghori engage in post-mortem rituals. They often dwell in charnel grounds, and smear cremation ashes on their bodies, and use bones from human corpses for crafting kapalas (skullcups which Shiva and other Hindu deities are often iconically depicted holding or using) and jewelry. Their practices are contradictory to orthodox Hinduism.[3

Many Aghori gurus command great reverence from rural populations as they are supposed to possess healing powers gained through their intensely eremitic rites and practices of renunciation and tápasya

Beliefs and doctrines

Aghoris are devotees of Shiva manifested as Bhairava,[5] and monists who seek moksha from the cycle of reincarnation or saṃsāra. This freedom is a realization of the self's identity with the absolute. Because of this monistic doctrine, the Aghoris maintain that all opposites are ultimately illusory. The purpose of embracing pollution and degradation through various customs is the realization of non-duality (advaita) through transcending social taboos, attaining what is essentially an altered state of consciousness and perceiving the illusory nature of all conventional categories.
Aghoris are not to be confused with Shivnetras, who are also ardent devotees of Shiva but do not indulge in extreme, tamasic ritual practices. Although the Aghoris enjoy close ties with the Shivnetras, the two groups are quite distinct, Shivnetras engaging in sattvic worship.
Aghoris base their beliefs on two principles common to broader Shaiva beliefs: that Shiva is perfect (having omniscience, omnipresence and omnipotence) and that Shiva is responsible for everything that occurs – all conditions, causes and effects. Consequently, everything that exists must be perfect and to deny the perfection of anything would be to deny the sacredness of all life in its full manifestation, as well as to deny the Supreme Being.
Aghoris believe that every person's soul is Shiva but is covered by aṣṭamahāpāśa "eight great nooses or bonds", including sensual pleasure, anger, greed, obsession, fear and hatred. The practices of the Aghoris are centered around the removal of these bonds. Sādhanā in cremation grounds destroys fear; sexual practices with certain riders and controls help release one from sexual desire; being naked destroys shame. On release from all the eight bonds the soul becomes sadāśiva and obtains moksha.

History

Aghori in Satopant.
An Aghori man in Badrinath smoking hashish or Cannabis from a chillum in 2011.
Although akin to the Kapalika ascetics of medieval Kashmir, as well as the Kalamukhas, with whom there may be a historical connection, the Aghoris trace their origin to Baba Keenaram, an ascetic who is said to have lived 150 years, dying during the second half of the 18th century.[7] Dattatreya the avadhuta, to whom has been attributed the esteemed nondual medieval song, the Avadhuta Gita, was a founding adi guru of the Aghor tradition according to Barrett (2008: p. 33):
Lord Dattatreya, an antinomian form of Shiva closely associated with the cremation ground, who appeared to Baba Keenaram atop Girnar Mountain in Gujarat. Considered to be the adi guru (ancient spiritual teacher) and founding deity of Aghor, Lord Dattatreya offered his own flesh to the young ascetic as prasād (a kind of blessing), conferring upon him the power of clairvoyance and establishing a guru-disciple relationship between them.[8]
Aghoris also hold sacred the Hindu deity Dattatreya as a predecessor to the Aghori Tantric tradition. Dattatreya was believed to be an incarnation of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva united in the same singular physical body. Dattatreya is revered in all schools of Tantra, which is the philosophy followed by the Aghora tradition, and he is often depicted in Hindu artwork and its holy scriptures of folk narratives, the Puranas, indulging in Aghori "left-hand" Tantric worship as his prime practice.
An aghori believes in getting into total darkness by all means, and then getting into light or self realizing. Though this is a different approach from other Hindu sects, they believe it to be effective. They are infamously known for their rituals that include such as shava samskara or shava sadhana (ritual worship incorporating the use of a corpse as the altar) to invoke the mother goddess in her form as Smashan Tara (Tara of the Cremation Grounds).
In Hindu iconography, Tara, like Kali, is one of the ten Mahavidyas (wisdom goddesses) and once invoked can bless the Aghori with supernatural powers. The most popular of the ten Mahavidyas who are worshiped by Aghoris are Dhumavati, Bagalamukhi, and Bhairavi. The male Hindu deities primarily worshiped by Aghoris for supernatural powers are manifestations of Shiva, including Mahākāla, Bhairava, Virabhadra, Avadhuti, and others.
Barrett (2008: p. 161) discusses the "charnel ground sādhanā" of the Aghora in both its left and right-handed proclivities and identifies it as principally cutting through attachments and aversion and foregrounding primordiality; a view uncultured, undomesticated:
The gurus and disciples of Aghor believe their state to be primordial and universal. They believe that all human beings are natural-born Aghori. Hari Baba has said on several occasions that human babies of all societies are without discrimination, that they will play as much in their own filth as with the toys around them. Children become progressively discriminating as they grow older and learn the culturally specific attachments and aversions of their parents. Children become increasingly aware of their mortality as they bump their heads and fall to the ground. They come to fear their mortality and then palliate this fear by finding ways to deny it altogether.[9]
In this sense, the Aghora sādhanā is a process of unlearning deeply internalized cultural models. When this sādhanā takes the form of charnel ground sādhanā, the Aghori faces death as a very young child, simultaneously meditating on the totality of life at its two extremes. This ideal example serves as a prototype for other Aghor practices, both left and right, in ritual and in daily life..

Spiritual headquarters

Hinglaj Mata is the Kuladevata (patron goddess) of the Aghori. The main Aghori pilgrimage centre is Kina Ram's hermitage or ashram in Ravindrapuri, Varanasi.[11] The full name of this place is Baba Keenaram Sthal, Krim-Kund. Here, Kina Ram is buried in a tomb or samadhi which is a centre of pilgrimage for Aghoris and Aghori devotees. Present head (Abbot), since 1978, of Baba Keenaram Sthal is Baba Siddharth Gautam Ram.
According to Devotees, Baba Siddharth Gautam Ram is reincarnation of Baba Keenaram himself. Apart from this, any cremation ground would be a holy place for an Aghori ascetic. The cremation grounds near the yoni pithas, 51 holy centers for worship of the Hindu Mother Goddess scattered across South Asia and the Himalayan terrain, are key locations preferred for performing sadhana by the Aghoris. They are also known to meditate and perform sadhana in haunted houses.

Medicine

Aghori practice healing through purification as a pillar of their ritual. Their patients believe the Aghoris are able to transfer health to, and pollution away from patients as a form of "transformative healing", due to the believed superior state of body and mind of the Aghori

Swami Kral Babji (A Profile)

Swami Kral Babji (A Profile)

Swami Kral Bab Maharaj

KASHMIR has given birth to many Sages, seers, Rish's and Sufi's ,in both the forms of male and females. It has seen lean periods of economics, social and spiritual gloom , but nature has always been kind enough from time to time to project a supreme personality of GODHEAD over the scene to save the humanity from sinking into abyss of degradation and misery.
His holiness Swami Kral Babji Maharaj was born in 1928 on Phagun Purnima from a modest humble agriculture family at KralGund village in tehsil Handwara J&K The name KRALBAB was given to him by his Guru Maharaj Nand lal ji(Kaul). His parental name was Sh Bhagwan Dass ji. The name of his parents was Sh Samsar Chand and Kudmali. From his childhood days his inclination towards God was visible. When the other young boys of his age would play with usual games in the village , he played with ashes, cow dung and smear such dust over his body. From his childhood it was evident that he was not interested in the worldly affairs. As a child he was always after his Kul Purohit to tell him the religious stories and prefered lonely and quite places to go for reciting religious hymes, which he had orally heard. After the death of his father,he could not escape the woes of Worldly life. His brothers gave him away to the domestic service of a Sub judge at sopore. The judge had two wives. One day Sub judge invited a saint for meals. The left over meals of the saint was not consumed by the wives of the judge as prasad and was passed on to Sh Kral Babji's for eating. This proved to be elevating touch to Sh Kral Babji's Spiritual path and an eye opener to the Sub judge and his wives. One day finding him in meditation, after finishing the house hold jobs, the Sub judge's family found a glow projecting from the forehead of BabjiMaharaj.Next day Sh Kral Babji was given much obeisance and reverence and made to give up the domestic job.Time had turned ripe for Sh Kral Babji to meet his Guru Chatanaiya Bramchari Yogi Raj Swami Nan lal ji Maharaj. It was a Guru -Shisia relationship from first sight and he was impatient to embrass,Sh Kral Babji as his disciple . But the bold words from the Submissive minded Kral Babji was "not " till his mother was alive.

Siddhi Suroopa
Sh Kral Babji was averse to get publicity through print or photographs,as he never wanted to be a trade mark to get commercially exploited. He was nor haughty not under materially contaminated conscious. He was for total Kashmiriyat. He was submissive before transcendtal friendship. Once a muslim lady came in tears and boldly said that she had no child even after five years of her marrage.Bab Maharaj was moved by her plight and said " Valie Kehna chona gam" (come on don't worry). Let you have this almond and God will fill your lap. The lady had a promise of a Sat Guru , which she knew would not fail. After nine months the lady was blessed with a son.
Before the air crash and death of General Zia of Pakistan was announced on radio or television or the world knew about it, it was Sh Kral Babji, who after opening his eyes from Samadhi declared "Peeva-Peeva" (fallen fallen). In panic we enquired as to what had fallen . He declared that Mahashesura had fallen. Later in the evening we could understand the truth of this words. It was Bab Maharaj's Siddhi'Syurapa, perfection of his constitutional position.
Ghari Ashram a Transit Camp during Migration
As regards our Exdous and turmoil from the valley, Bab Maharaj had made prophecy about the coming events long before. To lesson our suffering on account of migration,he had constructed an Ashram at Ghari udhampur much before 1989, the year of our Exdous. We often used to ask him,as what was the need of Ghari Asharam, when there were already number of Ashrams constructed in the valley by him at places like, Venkura (Baramulla),NamtHal (Budgam) He would reply "Ghari Ashram has to play a great role in the future .His Prophecy proved true and timely solution to the awakard crisis, created by no-secular religious Zealots. People througed the Ashram, stayed there for a few days and went away.During the days of migration it was really like a army transit camp.
His Holiness Kral Babji was exceptionally liberal and conciously honest even after his Nirvana. At Ghari Ashram Udhampur , there is a blessed window and in case any devotee wishes any help to negate his suffering ,he goes out and prayers before that window. His prayers are granted and wish fulfilled. This confidence helps to explain, how pure devotion can develop devine qualities, at the highest end of spiritual existence. Bab Maharaj was more open to show the Kashmiri spiritualism had more capacities and predisposition's of popular mind and miracles of the order and style of infinity, attested ,long back by nature at AmarNath Cave, Khir Bhawani , Sharda Shrine (POK) and other places.Kashmir was also called the Siddha Peth, a place of Success in Spiritual efforts . Here it was the graceful touch of many innocent and no informal education, who found power and providence of God, being master in Para-Vidiya,could talk about the relative values of reality.

Guru Shisa Parampra
Guru Shisa relationship between Swami Nad lalji Maharaj and Swami Kral Babji Maharaj was from the first sight.Swami Nand lal ji was born in Feburary 1903 at Srinagar in respected Kaul Family of Kashmiri Pandits. As a small boy he used to spend quite some time in the company of wandering monks. He was always liberal to meet saints coming from outside countries and even from Nepal. In his wandering he would spend nights in the Jungles of Kashmir. Even wild animals would forget their ferocious nature and instructure hostality. He wandered from place to place and ultimately sat at the holy feet of his Guru Maharaj Swami Lalji Maharaj. Swami Lalji was a strict disciplinarian and tough task master. Here Swami Nand Lalji learnt Yoga, Sanskrit , Scriptures and great scerets-stages of Yoga and Prana abayasa. Swami Nandlal ji found his spritual destination at Hardawar, Shardaji(POK),Gilgit, Ladak,Skardu, tibet at ultimately Mansarovar lake. He founded Ashrams at Tikker and Hushru. Some of his main desciples were Sh Kral Babji, Sh MastBabji, Sh Biatothji,Sh Vebeshanji and others.People of all the religions had a great faith in him. He went into Maha Samadi and left his mortal remains on Ist of February 1968 (Magh Shukla triya).
Sh Kral Babji as a Shrewd and sincere disciple followed the foot steps of his Guru and carried on eternal flame till his Nirvana in the year 1990 on Asoj Krishna Paksha Chuturdasi leaving behind legacy of large number of devotees and disciples. The main among them is Swami Kumarji . He is following the footsteps of his Guru Maharaj. The name Kumarji was given to him by Sh Kral Babji Maharaj . His parential name was Shiben Krishen and hails from Rawoosa Baramulla. He has inherited a profound reverence for the traditional hindi religion ie "SANANTAN DHARMA". Besides many social functions, many Havans are performed anually by him at Ghari Udhampur Ashram. Large number of devotees Visit the Ashram to seek the blessings of the SAT-GURU'S

    🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷🌷
*Kaaw Punim* is one of the unique festivals of *Kashmiri Pandits* & is observed every year on *Maagh Purnima*. This *festival* is austere, simple & indigenous in character. Unlike other festivals, there is no ostentation on this occasion. It is not being celebrated in the same fashion, *as it once used to be*,when Kashmiri Pandits  lived in Kashmir Valley (before migration in 90's). Many such festivals, are celebrated with less fervor and enthusiasm, *or* forgotten now, due to detachment from *community's cultural roots*.
*Before exodus* from the valley, Kashmiri Pandits used to celebrate *kaaw punim* with special charm, especially *children*, who anxiously waited for this occasion. They would make *Kaaw-Potul* (a hand made ladle/spoon from a long stick and hay) for *pious offerings to crows* from the windows of upper storeys or balcony of their respective houses.
*While offering the food to crows, the children would chant..................*
                 Kaaw  Bhatt  Kaawo,
                 Khechrey  Kaawo,
                 Gangbala  Shraana  Karith,
                 Gur  Maeche  Tyoka  Karith,
                 Walle bha  Saanay  Lare  Pyeth,
                 Daal  Batte  Khyene.
*It means, O erudite crow , O Khichri eater* (a mixture of rice & moong daal cooked together); after having a dip in river Ganga, put tilak (of clay) on your forehead, and come to our house, to have daal & rice.
In Kashmir, the women of every Pandit family traditionally used to offer fresh cooked food to crows, every day, before serving to the family members. A *Kaaw-Paet*(smooth wooden piece) hanging on front wall of a house signified that, "that particular house belongs to a Kashmiri Pandit.
Many myths are attached with Crow in Hindu mythology. One is of  *Kak-Bhushandi*,who was a pious man devoted to Lord Ram, but was cursed to become a Crow. The crow is considered to be very curious bird. Kak-Cheshta & Kak-Snaan, are idiomatic expressions of *curiosity and bathing* like a Crow *respectively in Sanskrit language*(Crow only dips his head, while having bath).
According to Hindu belief, Crows are representatives of our ancestors, Yama ,Dharamraja, planet Saturn & Krishna. By offering food to crows, they get pleased. The *Neelmat Puraan*, which is our source of cultural history says, "Poornmasyam Tu Maaghsya Shraadam Kritva Tiler-narah, Kakanaam Bhojnam Dadyaat Prabhootam Bali Sanyutam (Verse 516)"  *it means* , "On full moon-night of Maagh, a man should perform Shraadh with Sesame, and give enough pious food to crows". It is also believed that *Kaaw-Punim* is birthday of Crow.
Hindus see *God* in many creatures; be it Crow, Snake ,or human being. As such, offering food to crows is equal to "Jeeva-Karuna" , i.e. having pity on every creature. Also it is equivalent to Bhoot-Yajna, i.e. one of Panch Mahayajnas (fivefold duties) a family man should perform every day.
It is a general belief , that Crows serve as a hot-line medium between living & deceased ones. We should, therefore, maintain the tradition of offering food to crows and other animals, to make departed one's happy, so that they continue to shower their blessings and good wishes upon us. The ubiquitous crow does not eat alone, but alongwith his fellows. This activity of Crow is fellow feeling and community care.
The Kashmiri Pandit community may not be celebrating this *festive occasion*with great charm , due to uprooting from their homeland *or* advancement of *Western culture* , but its significance is even much more relevant today, when human values have faded away. Let it be either out of sheer compassion *or* out of blind beliefs perpetuated since ages , it is clear that this festival gives us a message fellow feeling is transacted through collective sharing and community caring , which is must for *our survival in exile*

Sheri Kashmir Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah turned out to be the pied piper of
Kashmir. He hypnotized his followers to dance to the tune 'Alea krengha
vanguen karengha bub karengha bub karengha'. He treated his followers like
rats of Hamelin. He challenged his opponents to win against his nominee-a
donkey or an electric pole. People were made to believe that he had mystic
powers to cure cancer patient with his sputum and handicapped with the lash
of his stick. Kashmiris believe canards more than the real. Following of
majority of the people made him arrogant. At the fag end of his life he
became power crazy. In his second term, corruption was at its rampant.
Medical and Engineering seats were sold to the highest bidders. Same was
true for allotment of residential plots. Last nail in the coffin was to
handover power and party to his most incapable son who ruined the both. He
ditched his colleagues who had suffered imprisonment with him. Those who
mourned his death and cried:"Asi kusoo trevieth bubo" say now "Sheikh
subunie kubur kashirie nebuer". He cared more for his family than for his
mammoth followers, the state and the party.

    (My Hero)

1960 the Degreeexamination was over and so was end of the student career. The result wasexpected any time within a period of three months. To use the transit period fruitfully,I joined Kashyap Girls High School as a teacher on a remuneration of Rs.36 permonth. Soon J L Pandita (The retired Senior Superintendent of Police) became mycolleague. He was already a graduate with brilliant academic record. Our monthlysalaries differed by two rupees. Hopefully, subject to favourable result in myDegree examination my salary would also be at par with J L Pundit’s.  Parity in our salaries was due to the parityin our respective qualifications. The one was a graduate and the other was yetan under-graduate. Pandita even today genuinely taunts at me that he replacedme as HOD Mathematics. I digest his taunt with utter humility.

One day for better looks Iborrowed two neckties from someone; one for myself and the other for mycolleague, who by then had become my friend. The lender taught us technique ofthe knot.

The School is on the roadside.Windows of the building open towards the road and front of the building with arunning verandah is towards its courtyard. It was first day of the next weekwhen we finally completed the British dress code. On way to school, some studentovertook us to break the news of the day. To our embarrassment, all the inmatesof the school; both students and teachers rushed from the courtyard where theyhad assembled for morning prayers, rushed upstairs and thronged by the windowsto have a first look of the unbelievable with their naked eyes. We marchedahead, took right turn and entered into the School courtyard. Those who hadthronged the windows rushed to the verandah to have a second look. We wentstraight to the office to mark our presence. Pandita fabled in nervousness. Hesaid, “Let us submit leave application for the day as we have to attend somemarriage function.” I did not agree with his excuse and preferred to face thesituation boldly.

The same week, both of us purchasedbrand new Raleigh Bicycles @ Rs 210/each from Duran Cycle at Exchange Road ondeferred payments. Brij Nath Durani owner of the shop was kind enough to offerus interest free facility of deferred payments with EMI (Each monthly installment)of Rs.10. Maqbool, his mechanic used to come to us every month on pay-day tocollect the installment. He was grateful for regular payment of installments.Cycle loan was liquidated on time. Now our next desire was for a leather jacket.Accustomed to the dress code, without any inhibition we continued with the tie.1939 born, I satiated my desire for the brown sober jacket on my 22ndbirthday on 19th February, 1961.

Both of us for betterprospectus changed our schools with little effect on our togetherness. Seeingus always together, some of our friends named our unity as that of Little Johnwith Robinson. I joined Vishwa Bharti High School @ Rs.70/PM. It was a bigjump, but it was only the beginning. I got a call from the Principal ofNational High School. He told me that being student of the School, I owed myservices to National High School. I had no reason to deny the offer especiallywhen the jump was still higher at par with the Government grade with a start ofRs.96/PM.

One day, I got a call fromthe Principal. He said that he was impressed by my dress code and I shouldcontinue to wear the tie. Seemingly, young and smart at 22, I was made in chargeof the Cricket Team and the Boating club.

In charge of the boat crew, I commanded thecrew in the river procession in honour of the reception given to Pundit JawaharlalNehru, the first Prime Minister of India. I believe it was his last visit toKashmir. The next day almost for one week, the crew had to practice for boatingin the Dal Lake.

After his retirement as ateacher from the Government, Mater Aqlal Raina from Purshyar joined NationalHigh School as a teacher. May be because of our age variation 22-60, though mycolleague, I had no interaction with Master Ji as he was called by his juniors.

Master Ji joined the Crewfor practice at Nehru Park. He, in white loose silken shirt took position onthe front end of the boat and the rest naked in bathing shorts took theirrespective positions. I had taken position at the steering end. The boat wasrowed away from the Nehru Park and it was near ‘Kotur-Khanea’. One of the crewmembers, 10th class student, the late Shiban Shishoo, a naughty boyof his age(Later on a Police officer) said to Master Ji,” Master Ji, tohiecha mahra chanth(Master Ji, are you a swimmer?).Master Ji, a seasoned teacherwith a treasure of experience and knowledge of child psychology, said, “Shibnea….Iknow how to swim, but don’t do any mischief here farther from Nehru Park wherenobody can rescue you.” Instantaneously, Shiban gave a few jolts and the boat turnedturtle. Barring Master Ji, all the crew members started beating the water, little knowing how to swim. After many cries, State Road Transport Service Boatcrew rescued the drowning crew. Until arrival of the rescue team, Master Ji gaveshoulder to Nazir and many others.

Master Ji avoided acatastrophe. In his absence the day would have turned into the Day of Tragedy.

I believe Nazir must haveretired as an SE. Shiban died very young a natural death.

I revere Master Ji as myHero. Peace be to his soul, a Great Man, Shani Pushyar.

The next day on rehearsal,I proved too weak to hold the steering (Num rutuen). The front end of the boat overrode the adjacent boat to my left and the rare end the boat adjacent to myright. The overriding became contagious in a chain and for no fault of theirs, all got disqualified.

(Our participation was noless than ‘murdhea pujamuen zung chununie te buer valien sutie thukh duen)

    Jai Hind.

Swara Bhaskar's opinion on it is not only trenchant but it is also written with passion, courage, high moral values, succinct style, and brilliant prose. Rarely have a seen a point made sostrongly. and in such consummate verve.
