Swami Nanda Bab Ji (popular known as Nanda-Moat) was born on Dec. 30, 1896, at Purshayar,Habbakadal, Srinagar. His father was Pt. Shanker Sahib and his mother Smt. Imberzal. Smti Ibwerzal had a sister in Nunar, a village near Laar, Ganderbal. She had no issue of her own and adopted Swami Nanda-Bab-Ji. Nanda Bab Ji was fairly conversant in writing English, Urdu and Persian in a beautifully calligraphic style. He was stubborn and obstinate to the point of unrecluctantly getting whatever he would set his mind on.
Nanda-Bab Ji was well built and his face would always radiate with a spiritual grace. After finishing his education, he joined the Police Department and was posted as a Mohrarir in Police Station, Pukhribal. It is said that Swamiji had the vision of Sharika Maa at this very place. One day, one of his colleagues advised him to remain properly dressed as a Senior police Officer was to visit the Station next day. Ignoring this advice, Swamji went to Devi-Angan, next day, and got absorbed in a deep meditation there. It was witnessed by some of his other colleagues. When the Inspecting Officer visited the Station, he found Swamiji present to the great astonishment of every body present there. From this date on, the miracles of the Swami ji came on light.
After some time Swamiji was transferred to Tangadhar where he joined against his wishes. One day Swamiji left Tanghadar on foot for Srinagar, without permission. On way to Srinagar he met a British Officer who was wearing a hat. Swamiji removed his hat and put that on his own head. A legal action was instituted against him and having been found guilty of insulting a British Officer, he was dismissed from the State Service. Since that episode he started wearing a hat for the rest of his life.
With his background of proficiency in Urdu and Persian etc., he undertook the job of a Petition Writer. One day a man came to Swamiji for getting a mercy-petition drafted as he was an accused in a murder case. In fact the person had not committed the crime but was falsely implicated in the case. Swamiji drafted the appeal and also put the decision thereon. When the appeal was actually seen by the Judge concerned, he put Swami ji behind bars. On reaching home that evening, the judge became terribly restless, and, after pondering over the issue, he immediately ordered the release of Swamiji.
Sati-Ded, popularly known as Sati Macha, was a contemporary of Swamiji. She lived at Tankypora, Habbakadal. It was this lady-saint who had predicted the present exodus of the KPs with the words: "Batni Watnuk Loal Mai Oai" Swamiji also had predicted about it when he had gone to Achabal to see his disciplines there. Suddenly Mata SatiDed's health deteriorated and the news spread throughout the State. Swami ji went for her Antim-Darshan and started shouting," I have to take the seat of Mata Sati-Ded" But he was not allowed to go inside the house by her daughter, Deka Ded. Swamiji was, however, taken by one of his disciplines, Shri Mahnoori, to his place, at Tankipora. It is form there that Swamiji gained extraordinary momentum. He made miraculously amazing predictions during the wards of 1947, 1962, 9165, 1971. For example in the China War he one day said "Shahi Cheena, Fish Kar Lutak" and the next day, there was cease-fire.
He made predictions about the rise and fall of Bakshi Sahab, the then Chief Minister, Whenever Swamiji would go to some place the people around him would tremble in fear apprehending some untoward prediction to come from him.
Swamiji would always carry three Holy Books of Kuran, Gita and Bible with him, living up to the established belief that Sat-Gurus have no cast or religion or domicile. During his last days while living at his native place Nunar, a couple from Mumbai came to see him. The lady had a hunch-back. Swamiji beat her physically and she ran away and fell into a mire. Swamiji gave her a bath and her physical deformity had completely disappeared in the process. Swamiji was held in great esteem by all the then Chief Minister, Bakshi Sahab, as also by the Prime Minister of India, Smt. Indira Gandhi.
Swamiji left his mortal coil on October 10,1973 at Delhi after a brief illness. His mortal remains were brought to Srinagar, by air and kept at Shivalai- Mandir, for Last-Darshan by his devotees and general public. His funeral was attended by thousands of people from all walks of life including Sheikh Mohd. Abdullah.
Swami Nanda Bab Asharam has been established by Swami Chaman Lal Ji Bamzai on February 15,2001, at Laley-De-Bagh. The Ashram is progressing well under the over all patronage of Bamzai Sahab. A Marbal Murti of Swami Nand Bab Ji has been installed at the Ashram on his 111th Birth Anniversary, which fell January, 02, 2008.
